THE BOOK

EVERY SCAR TELLS A STORY–“The book that started everything.”

About the Book

Every Scar Tells a Story is a memoir about navigating disability across a lifetime — from crutches to a cane to wheels — and refusing to let any stage of that journey be the whole story.

Victoria Mavis writes about the farm where she grew up, the career she fought for, the promotions she didn’t get, the strangers who stared, the moments of grace, and the hard-won understanding that the scars we carry are not our limitations. They are our credentials.

It is not a book about tragedy. It is a book about what happens when you decide your disability is not the most interesting thing about you — and then go prove it.

What Readers Say

“You’ve been such an inspiration for me and I’ve used you to inspire my children as they grew up, telling them of your strength and grace. I just wanted you to know that you have touched and are touching lives in so many ways. I am proud and honored to call you my friend.” – Tom S.

“Thank you Victoria – you all inspired me to work with my patients with disabilities differently. Rather than being impatient or trying to instruct them to do it “my way”, I have altered my approach to ask them “’What works best for you?” Afterall, my job as a PT professional is to support them to achieve as much independence as possible.” Traci P.

“The book helped me look at my life and understand some of the difficulties I had with my parents. It’s not that they didn’t love me; rather, they didn’t understand what it was like to sit in my chair and try to wheel somewhere.” Kent B.

“I consistently hear from the people who read it, how it changed their view on how difficult it must be to have a disability such as mine. That’s when I tell them “‘Now you know and see people differently and provide support in a way that empowers and provides inclusion.” — Victoria Mavis

What’s Next — The Film

Every Scar Tells a Story is currently in development as a screenplay.

The story of Liz Morris — a woman who has navigated the world on crutches, with a cane, and on wheels for over six decades — is now being adapted for the screen. Same truth. Wider audience. The book made readers look at their own lives. The film will make them feel it.

“The book made people look at their own lives and they struggled with that. That’s not a failure. That’s the book working.” — Victoria Mavis
