In 1964, Author Victoria Mavis was disabled at the age of four from a tragic accident that resulted in brain trauma. This left her partially paralyzed. Facing a grim diagnosis, she fought hard to relearn basic functions such as walking and talking through months of rehabilitation. She was successful, despite her reliance on crutches or a wheelchair for her mobility

Her Growing Challenges…

In 1965, Victoria Mavis became the first child with a physical handicap to attend her local school. It was a period in history when those with disabilities were shunned in public or institutionalized. Luckily for Victoria, that’s not the vision her parents had for her.

Victoria Mavis, armed with her wheelchair and forearm crutches is a pioneer of equality for individuals with disabilities. Her advocacy started early in life as she faced bullying and discrimination because of her disability. Victoria paved the way for those who ‘didn’t fit in’ long before the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became legislature or ‘bullying’ was a community epidemic.

Professional Life of Author Victoria Mavis

Author Victoria Mavis lived in a world where her handicap was the ‘pink elephant’ in the room which all noticed but no one spoke about. Only her family and a few lose friends knew the cause of her the disability And even they weren’t aware of the horrific discrimination she endured from being judged on the gait of her walk rather than her professional abilities. Despite obstacles over the years, she has always left a mark of inner strength and determination with everyone she meets.
